ANGELINA PWERLE

Born c.1952-
Country: Utopia, Lyentye (Mosquito Bore), Alice Springs NT

Angelina lives and works in Ngkawenyerre, Utopia, Northern Territory. She is a veteran of the Utopia batik movement of the 1980's. However it has largely been through the medium of acrylic on canvas, which was introduced to the community shortly afterwards, that Angelina has come to national and international prominence.

Angelina paints the Dreaming, Bush Plum. She uses coloured dots to represent the various phases of the fruits ripening to maturity as underpainting, and a milky white over-dotting to create translucency and depth. The result is a rich vibrant pattern that appears almost to shift on the surface creating a magnificent area filled with life and movement. Her paintings are tight in style with well thought out optical effects. Her palate has a restricted monochrome feel, like that of Kathleen Petyarre. Angelina also produces carved animal sculptures.

Bush Plum
Amwekety - the Bush Plum, depicts the changing seasonal influences on a plant that is of the greatest significance to the Alyawrre women of the Eastern Desert region of the Northern Territory. The Bush Plum is a highly nutritious small fruit with black seeds, rich in vitamin C, that can be eaten raw or cooked. Growing in a great profusion of flower and fruit throughout the winter months, the women, accompanied by the children collect the Bush Plums, while at the same time reconfirming their connection to the land. The flourish of colour that distinguishes the Bush Plum after the fall of rain, is quickly transformed with the long hot summer months. Dried and separated, the seed and husk are scatter over the vast sunbaked landscape by the hot summer winds.
